Earth Song – Michael Jackson

Ok, well this is a song that our newest writer, ‘Haggis’, suggested that I should review, stating that it should go, ‘at the top of the list’. Well Haggis, this ones for you.

Well, it’s an Eco-Song. Just the first 30 seconds tell you that. It’s a nice change to see a celebrity doing something that shows them to care about the environment. Yeah right! They’re always doing it. Michael Jackson, however, has always seemed to genuinely care about his subject matter. (Take ‘Black or White’ as a prime example!)

Anyway. Eco-Warrior Mickey Jay to the rescue? Well, with this song, he could be. Normally, I’d start with the song, but in this case, let’s start with the video (easily found on Youtube).

Picture a jungle scene, with beautiful flora and fauna spread about all over the place, as a digger of some kind (I forget it’s name), starts to sweep through the area. Follow this up with the image of M J walking through a slightly burning, ex-forest, giving the impression that he is in post-apocalyptia. Now add some Eco-Lyrics and a bit of Eco-Filler, and you’ve got Earth Song. Now, that may have sounded like I didn’t like it. Don’t get me wrong. I did like it. But that’s the point. I LIKED it. I didn’t love it. I didn’t fap to it. Heck, I didn’t even feel like letting the cat in the house. Correct em if I’m wrong, but the whole point of an Eco-Song, is to move the listener to the point where they WANT to help the environment. Don’t tickle them into thinking about what we’ve done wrong with the world, but rather, make them realise that if THEY don’t do something to help make things right, they’re fucked!

Ok. Onto the backing tune. Starts off very melodic. It’s very calm and peaceful. Good. Makes the listener feel relaxed, just before you throw the pie in their face. So anyway, you have a verse of this relaxed backing, before it jumps up a few decibels for the chorus, returning to normal afterwards. Of course, for most of the rest of the song, it’s all a lot less relaxed, as you have M J fighting to hold onto what little scenery there is around him, in what looks like a gale force 9 storm. Good luck Mickey!

Lyrically, it’s sound. (Lol). All of the words fit in with the Eco-Theme. Great. But then the ending got too ‘Thriller’ for my liking, with what sounds like the exact same 4 lines spoken over and over and over and over and over and over and…

Over and over and over again! This goes on for at least a minute or 2. It just gets a bit unbearable towards the middle. Come on Mickey – Shake it up a bit!

As for my favourite lyrics? Well, here you go:

“What about sunrise
What about rain
What about all the things
That you said we were to gain…
What about killing fields
Is there a time
What about all the things
That you said was yours and mine…
Did you ever stop to notice
All the blood we’ve shed before
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores?”

Very touching lyrics there. He obviously cared about the world we live in.

So, a score. Well, I like the song. Not a lot, but I like it. It has a kick to it. It has a sense of ‘do something’ to it. It has the King of Pop in it.

I’ll give a 7/10.

On a more personal note, R.I.P Michael. Regardless of what some people thought, you were a great singer, a great song writer and most of all, a great man. Thank you for everything that you gave the world.
