Tottenham is where it all started. The riots quickly moved to other cities such as Birmingham, Liverpool Bristol and many more. But why did they all start, and why are they showing no signs of stopping.
Before I start writing my first review (although this is not much of a review), I would like to take some time to explain to everyone what I will be reviewing, and the style I will be reviewing.
I will be doing ‘normal’ reviews such as films, games and TV series. However, we are supposed to examine all types of media, so I thought the news would be a god place for me to start. I will also try to start political debate by posting an argument which I may or may not believe, and would like people to argue against me in the comments section below to get more participation from our readers. My political beliefs will never be revealed to try to remain unbiased.
As well as the cities listed above, many smaller cities have also had scenes of violence. For example, last night, my ‘home city’ of Oxford experienced some violence with some shop windows smashed and looted. This made me think – are people rioting for the original cause, or is this all an excuse for anarchism and self gain?
The “original cause” stated above is however, still unclear. Before a brief chat with That Guy before I started to write this review, I believed that a teenager fired a round at an armed police officer, who was unharmed and in self-defence, fired at the teenager which resulted in his death. Now, I believe a very high percentage of people would have done the same if they were in that situation. I’d of thought that the teenager shot to kill, therefore, if he failed to do so, he would have tried again and probably would have been successful.
However, That Guy pointed out that there was no report or evidence that the youth fired the gun at him, it simply reported that his police radio was shot. Some people – including myself – would immediately think that he obviously fired the weapon or the radio could not be hit. When That Guy suggested this to me, I followed with a long pause as I believed he was wrong and he did shoot to kill the officer, but I could not think of a valid response to his argument because there was simply, no evidence.
If you are reading this now and believe that there was evidence, or a way to argue against ‘That Guys’ point, please correct me and post in the comments below.
To ‘That Guy’: If there is anything I have missed out from our conversation, please also feel free to correct me below.
Now, back to the previous question: Are people rioting for the original cause, or is this all an excuse for anarchism and self gain? Personally, I believe it is a bit of both. The original riot must have started because of the original cause because lets face it, if the teenager was not shot, there would be no riots. However, after the riot spun out of control on the first night, other teenagers saw an opportunity.
Again, my style of writing when it comes to news and politics can be bias and opinionated so I urge you to argue if you disagree, but the videos shown above disgust me. What the Government and MP’s are trying to tell the public through the news is that the rioting has not turned London into an anarchist community. It is still against the law to mug, steal and loot from shops. Last time I checked, over 450 people have been arrested and the holding cells are full. The police do not have the resources to deal with big problems so quickly.
Now, there are 2 big questions to consider:
- Have the Government lost control
- Should more resources such as Plastic round, Water cannons and the military be introduced.
This is where I want you to argue your views. As all of my political debates, I will put some arguments forward first. (NOTE: This may or may not be what I believe, I’m just trying to get the ball rolling)
- The Government have completely lost control. If the Government still had control, London would not be up in flames as well as many other cities.
- Water cannons should be used to control mobs of people if necessary. If the violence increases against the police, then plastic rounds should be used. However, the military should be kept out of it at all costs. If the army is introduced, it would suggest that the government are trying to control a revolution, not a riot. We simply do not have enough soldiers.
Please comment and put your thoughts forward and argue against me.
