When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me, speaking words of wisdom, let it be. Ok. So far so good, but that’s line one. What else have you got for me?
I bet you know the score anyway. It’s the frickin Beatles. How can I be mean? They had John ‘Frickin’ Lennon! John, Paul, George and Ringo. Sounds a bit like a papal band. John Paul, George and Ringo. Maybe I should make that…
So, the song. Let It Be is quite possibly one of their simplest song. It’s got a few basic notes, drums, a little bit of guitar work and some vocals. Simple. As they say, less is more, making this a horde of diamonds and gold. Great. I was starting to run low.
The music is relaxed, simple and also, somehow, great. They manage to combine the relaxed nature of ponder, with the intense religious theme throughout. Good work lads. Good work.
The lyrics work on so many levels. They combine the need for answers with the realisation that whatever the result, there’s nothing they can do anyway, so they should just let it be. They’re not perfect, but they’re bloody close!
Now, I have to admit, I haven’t got any favourite lyrics to this song and I couldn’t find a video for it (although, I didn’t look very hard), so that pretty much wraps up this review.
