Ah. A song I’ve not heard for a while. It’s always nice to hear a few classics that I can play on Guitar Hero 3…
Cambodia. I’ve never seen it on a map or considered going there, but until I looked up the lyrics to this song, I was considering considering it. Then I saw the lyrics and though ‘fuck yeah, let’s go!’. I jest, of course. It sounds like a terrible place…
The lyrics are pretty well composed actually, particularly at the start, which just so happens to be my favourite lyrics in the song.
‘So you been to school
For a year or two
And you know you’ve seen it all
In daddy’s car
Thinkin’ you’ll go far
Back east your type don’t crawl ‘
So, it just so happens that in this particular song, they show Cambodia in a bad light and compare it to wherever they were singing the song from, in the form of preconceptions. We assume that our place is nice, so that place is nice. NO! THAT’S NOT HOW IT WORKS! Everywhere sucks, apart from wherever you are at any given moment. True story!
The music is quite… Different. It has a definite rhythm to it – something that you can bop to – whilst it also has a very negative, yet slightly positive sound to it. Overall, it’s negative, but there’s a bit where it picks up a bit and sounds quite positive. It’s hard to explain. Just listen to it!
So, the score? Let me see…
It’s a bit, off, if that makes sense? I mean, there’s something that doesn’t feel right about it. No-one else I know likes this song, but I think it’s great. Sure, it sounds a bit off, but it also touches on an important topic – Cambodia and the hell that it is…
