If you haven’t seen “Children of the Night” yet. GO AND WATCH IT. I’m going to post the video above this review so go and watch it now. We’ll wait.
Ok you’re back. It’s brilliant isn’t it.
“Children of the Night” is one of those things that makes me really love the brony fandom. Nobody can have a problem with it. It’s a brilliant peice of animation and music and that’s it, the world of Equestria is a setting for it and it includes characters from the show, but it’s really an just amazing peice of supernatural fiction. It could be set in a germanic folktale and it would be the same story, but the addition of characters we know and love and the setting of a world which lends itself perfectly to this type of story makes it so much better.
The music and art has that dark and unnerving edge which I really love and the overall tone as the song reminded me of things like “Nightmare before Christmas”. There is one bit at 2:15 where it sounds like the singer’s voice breaks but according to youtube comments this is actually some type of singing technique to help change pitches or something (don’t say I don’t research my reviews properly).
The animation is amazing, I’d go so far as to say it even surpasses the animation of the show at times, and the characters emote really well. It reminds me of a more japanese style animation subtly woven into the normal style of the show.
As for the actual story. I quite like it. Lots of people have said that this paints Luna as evil because she’s kidnapping children. But just listen to the story. After Discord is overthrown Equestria is left in tatters. This makes sense, after all you don’t fix the problems caused by the embodiment of chaos in a day. Luna sees what the children are going through and wants to help them by setting up a colony where they can be happy. Once again makes sense. We saw in “Sleepless in Ponyville” that when Luna is talking with Scootaloo she seems to really care for her. So we know she cares for the children of Equestria. And finally if we look at the children she’s taking there’s two things we notice. First the children she takes seem to be having a rough time, there’s even one sleeping in cardboard boxes and some of them look like they’re in an orphanage. She’s not kidnapping them, she’s taking them to a better life. And secondly, none of them seem afraid to be going with her, actually we only see them smiling at the begining when we see one that’s grown up and when we see them being taken.
In this Luna actually seems to be alot like a Wewe, a female ghost that takes children who are being mistreated away and cares for them. If anything this video actually paints Celestia as bad because she rejects Luna’s idea for bureaucratic and political reason rather than considering the lives of the children.
But yeah, this is possibly the greatest peice of fan work I have ever seen.
I just want to clarify with you all, this isn’t a replacement for my normal review. I’m putting that up tommorrow. I just really wanted to talk about this and didn’t want to wait a couple of weeks for my next pony stuff review thing.
