Bruce Springsteen – Dancing In The Dark

And here we have the fifth and final part of Springsteen Week, with Dancing In The Dark, the number one Springsteen song on Spotify. Is it worthy of the position? Is it his best song? Is that even what that means? Who knows?!? Let’s get on with it!

Dancing In The Dark, not to be mistaken for Dancing With Myself by Billy Idol.

It’s definitely got that 80’s synth feel to it throughout – musically, it feels very artificial, and I’m almost shocked by it, if I’m honest. For the number one spot on the list, I was expecting something… more. Don’t get me wrong, the drums are solid, the guitar work is acceptable, but I’ve never been a fan of synths…

With… some exceptions.

Lyrically, it’s got a few gems.

You can’t start a fire
You can’t start a fire without a spark

And…

There’s something happening somewhere
Baby I just know that there is

And I chalk that up to Bruce’s linguistic talents – not that I know he wrote the songs – I haven’t the foggiest, but I consider him to be from an era where it was the norm, and if that isn’t true, please don’t tell me otherwise because I’ll just get depressed.

Another stage performance music video…

For the sharper eyed viewer there, yes, that is Courtney Cox of F.R.I.E.N.D.S fame joining him on stage towards the end there.

So all in all, it’s a good song. Get rid of the synths and it could be a great song. Come on Bruce, get rid of the synths!

8/10
