Red Hot Chili Peppers – Californication

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening and good night!

Californication, the song, as opposed to the tv show. Apparently, there’s sex with a nun at the start of that. Only in California, eh?

Get thee to a nunnery!

The song is a look at the darker side of Hollywood, if it can be considered a dark side – with the general fakeness of the entire place being the centerpiece. Some of the lyrics focus on this quite nicely, such as:

Pay your surgeon very well to break the spell of aging
Celebrity skin is this your chin or is that war you’re waging?
Space may be the final frontier but it’s made in a Hollywood basement
That last one, is, in fact, my favourite of the entire song. It’s a good song, it’s apparently one of their most popular, and I can definitely see why.
Throw in the music, which I actually feel lets the song down a bit, but is very distinct anyway, and you’ve got a song that you could never, ever, ever, mix up with a different one. It’s unique in so many different ways, and that’s what we really want from the musicians of the world, right? New stuff?
It’s what I want, at least.
Got weird video too. What’s not to like?
