Heroes. A song I only discovered thanks to movies, which is a post you should really check out.
We round off Bowie Week with a classic… But is it any good?
The song starts with a fantastic opening riff – all the instruments comes together beautifully to suck you in, right before Bowie unveils his voice and makes you remember why you’re listening at all.
Lyrically, there are moments that are masterpiece, moments that are a bit out there, but that’s what Bowie is famous for – being a bit out there. For me, this is the bit that makes this song so great…
And you, you can be mean
And I, I’ll drink all the time
‘Cause we’re lovers, and that is a fact
Yes we’re lovers, and that is that
That said, I always thought it was “me” and not “mean”, so that’s something.
It’s a cheerful song about being lovers, and nothing getting in the way of that love because why should anything be able to get in the way of love? Well, there’s a fair few things that should be able to get in the way of love, but location shouldn’t be one of those things. That said, it was supposedly inspired by an affair, so…
It’s a masterpiece of music, it’s a masterpiece of vocals, and it’s a fitting song to remember Bowie for, from amongst them all.
