This is the only song this week with Cardi B both featuring, and without an explicit warning. I suspect that the fact that she’s featuring on a predominantly Bruno Mars song may have something to with that. Despite having some more adult themes, his songs tend to be more family friendly than not, in my mind. Like a modern, musical, Elmo.
I’m not loving it. Don’t get me wrong, it certainly feels more wholesome – though far from it still – and the beat is somewhat more enjoyable, but the words, the vocals, and the rest of the music just drag the beat down to the mud. It’s not a good song, far from it, but it’s the best song of the week, so far.
I think my main problem is that she just comes across as being incredibly arrogant, without the substance to back it up. All she seems to have is angry and a passable voice for spouting out her anger. I can do that. I can do that as well as she does, I’m sure. You won’t see me collaborating with Bruno Mars, though, will you?
Which of course, brings to mind, why did he sink so low? But that’s a question for a more peaceful time – it is half-past midnight and I’m not really feeling the rant that is sure to follow the previous question if I allow myself to get into it, so I’m going to avoid it completely.
All I have to say is this – it feels very much like a cross between a Michael Jackson song, a generic 90’s boyband pop backing track, and the time that angry fisherman’s wife shouted at Benny for looking in her general direction – it just isn’t pleasant.
